Eleven inked fountain pens for January 2015
Writing samples from the 11 fountain pens

It’s a new month, not to mention a new year, and I have 11 pens inked to start them off. This compares to December when I started the month with 13 fountain pens.
The Lamy 2000, Pilot Custom 823, Gold KarasKustoms Ink and Sheaffer Imperial were all written dry, cleaned, and put back in the case. The Lamy and Pilot were tough to give up since they’re a couple of my favorite writers. The Sheaffer was fun to play with, but it’s nib is so far outside my comfort zone it’s not missed. The Ink was replaced with a different Ink (Blue with a broad nib).
The only really newly inked fountain pen is the Omas 360 Vintage (in name only) LE which I filled with Montblanc Bordeaux. I wanted to keep Bordeaux in the rotation. I picked the Omas because the nib, despite being a fine, is different than the rest of the pens already inked.
Here are the inked pens. As usual the Esterbrook Dip-less isn’t pictured but otherwise the pens are in the same order in the photo and writing samples.

Obligatory Year End Post

Gold fountain pen Ink with copper section
My personal pen of the year – Gold Ink with copper section

Relatively speaking, my pen additions in 2014 were way down from the 99 in 2013. I “only” added 15 fountain pens and three Esterbrook nibs to my accumulation. Although this doesn’t include the two pens on a UPS truck (or plane) on their way to me and due to arrive next week.
Picking a favorite of the 2014 crop isn’t difficult since I own three of them and have two more on the way. Not to mention that I have three rollerball versions of the same pen. If you haven’t already guessed, I’m talking about the KarasKustoms Ink. The pen is a near perfect size for me and I love the industrial design. Although the gold with copper section is my favorite single Ink it’s the multitude of colors and gripping section materials which can be mixed and matched that is the real draw for me.
A fountain pen that surprised me was the Sheaffer Crest. It’s a thin pen which goes against my current preferences. I bought the pen because of the stunning finish and it’s a Sheaffer. I never expected it to be a pen I enjoy writing with. But the pen exceeded my expectations and it’s a favorite. The Nova Red finish is stunning and the extra fine nib is sublime. Just like the KarasKustoms Ink I went back for more and picked up the Nova Green version.
As for the blog…
Thanks to all of you, readership more than doubled from last year, at least based on views. If there are things you’d like to see more of, or less of, let me know in the comments or the contact form.
I published 166 articles this year, 167 including this one. Of those 55 were fountain pen or Esterbrook nib reviews and 22 were ink reviews. Even though I didn’t add many new pens this year I did have a lot of fun using a variety of pens from my accumulation.

Pilot Custom 823 with Montblanc Boardeaux ink

This week’s favorite fountain pen & ink are my Pilot Custom 823 with a fine nib and filled with Montblanc Bordeaux. The pen is just about empty but it will be immediately refilled with the same ink. The fine nib, a thin Japanese fine, is smooth and problem free and a joy to write with.

Sheaffer Balance II Aspen

Most of my writing was done at home this past week so I got to use my favorite pen of the them all. In fact it tops my Fav 5 list. The Sheaffer Balance Aspen is a gorgeous pen but it’s history of being fragile keeps it around the house. The ink is Montblanc Permanent Grey.
Some links I found interesting this past week…
Pelikan made some announcements which will almost certainly end up costing me some money. FP Geeks brought news of the Pelikan M805 Stresemann. A beautiful pen with the only negative being the price. I compared the M800 and the M1000 at a pen show this year and decided the the M800 was the pen for me. This one has the looks to match the writing experience and may make me open my wallet for it’s high price. The Pelikan’s Perch brought news of the M200 Café Crème Due. Other than “in 2015” and approx. $154) there’s not much info.
